Liyu Lake
The largest inland lake in Hualien area, with a 4-kilometer-long lakeside road, is perfect for walking, cycling, boating, picnicking, and getting close to nature.
Liyu Lake is the largest inland lake in the Hualien area. It takes its name from the nearby mountain, whose shape resembles a carp; thus the mountain and lake share the same name. A 4-kilometer road circles the lake and can be walked in about one hour. Visitors can camp, picnic, or enjoy the lake. In good weather, paragliding enthusiasts gather on Liyu Mountain east of the lake, soaring in brightly colored canopies above the mountain and water and adding even more beauty to the scenery. There is plenty to enjoy here by day or night. In the gentle sunshine, you can pedal a boat across the lake or cycle around it. When hunger strikes, try the fresh live shrimp. From April to June, the lake becomes especially enchanting after sunset: pale moonlight on the water cannot outshine the fireflies dancing across the hills and fields, creating a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. When passing through the area, please slow down and minimize light sources so as not to disturb the fireflies.
