The coastline of Hualien City is divided into two sections: Nanbin and Beibin. In the early days, Nanbin was a beachhead for Han Chinese settlers when they landed in Hualien. Later, due to the large waves and difficulty in entering and leaving the port, they moved to the mouth of the Meilun River. Since then, Nanbin has been gradually forgotten. It was not until recent years that this section of the coastline was developed into the Nanbin Park and became a place for Hualien people to play in the waves that it has become popular again.
The beach near Nanbin Park has always been a popular route for strolling, enjoying the sea view, playing in the water, and collecting unusual stones. After development by several mayors, Nanbin Park is now lush and green, resembling a weekend leisure plaza with a circular plaza, a pigeon-raising area, observation decks, and a rockery walkway. On clear days, parasailing and kite flying are common sights. During the day, the shore is a tranquil Nanbin Park; at night, the area opposite the park becomes bustling with food stalls and amusement parks. Over time, after further renovations and planning by several mayors, it has transformed into the Nanbin Night Market, a vibrant night market in Hualien, brightly lit, teeming with vendors and throngs of people.
